Lurker – Freedom of Info

Wednesday, September 5, 2012 | Lurker

This month, I think we are all in need of some DIY democracy.

One of the ways people have been more able to feel ownership of information about them, or their city or services is by Freedom of Information requests.

Some people want to find out about records kept about them, and this is a confidential process.

But many people want to know things that should be in the public domain, like travel expenses payments, injuries on site, experiments on animals (university), property adaptation waiting lists (Wolverhampton Homes), Diabetes educations programmes etc

There is a site that can help you with this.

It is called whatdotheyknow.com and while it is quite plain looking, it is very easy to use.

You can make a request of a public authority – such as the council, the pct, hospitals, schools, wolverhampton Homes, the university etc – by filling in a very simple form on the website.

you just state yopur city, pick the public body you are sending the request to (eg Wolverhampton College, Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals, Wolverhampton Council etc)

Then you write a one line summary of your request then fill in the details in the letter box, and click submit.

On the website you can also see all the other requests and answers that have been submitted to Wolverhampton Public Bodies.

One Voice is run by and for disabled people, and has lots of information for disabled people, friends, family, carers, collegues, and anyone else who want to know about issues affecting disabled people’s lives.

Have a look around, and tell us what you think
